The breath of fire comes from Kundalini Yoga and helps us release anxiety and stress and strengthens the nervous system. It helps strengthen our 'gut' feelings.
In my opinion, we are born with a clean and clear gut, but through the years the gut gets dirty and messy because we listen to other people's opinion and we live in societies molds, rather than our own. In order to live our own life we need to be one with the gut to get back to discovering who we are and what we want and need. - Swami

Check out the video below for more on the power of community, nature and sharing your story. Do you ever feel so stressed or overwhelmed that you find yourself blinking back tears at the sight of the house or piles of laundry? I do. Sometimes I even pick it up and throw it across the room as hard as I can when no one is looking. I catch myself rushing sometimes for no reason and feeling anxious. On days like these, all I want to do is collapse on the bed and veg out to romantic comedies with boxes of munchies. On the seldom occasion when I actually have the opportunity to do just that, it is wonderful, but most of the time I need to make dinner for my daughter, read books, clean up the house, and work. As a former division one athlete, exercise has always been a huge part of my life and there is no doubt that there is a link between mental health and exercise. (In fact, podcast coming soon on why!) When I injured my knee, I not only lost the mental health aspect of exercise, but the social aspects as well. I lost my community at my gym and people that cheered me on while I worked out and that I carried with me in life and throughout my day. Luckily, I am back in the gym and back to a more sound mind, body, spirit and community that surrounds me. I know the importance of sport, but I really know the value for our lives that the community of exercise and sport brings - and that is what I think fuels my body the most! |
